Protein Powders

Whey Protein Isolate NSF by Thorne is a great protein powder with a simple ingredient list. Whey protein isolate is one of the highest quality protein sources and can be a great tool to help increase protein intake throughout the day.

SPORT Organic Plant-Based Protein by Garden of Life is a super high quality plant-based protein powder for those looking to reduce or avoid animal products altogether. This protein powder has 2527mg of leucine which is adequate for stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Add this with other ingredients like flax, chia, and soy milk to hit 30 grams of protein in your morning smoothie.

Whey Cool Plain by Designs for Health is a great unflavored protein powder for all of those out there who do not like traditional chocolate or vanilla options. It has 22 grams of protein per serving and has a simple ingredient list of just whey protein isolate. This is a great simple protein powder option.

Probiotics

GLP-1 Probiotic by Pendulum is a novel blend of bacteria that have been shown to decrease food cravings by increasing endogenous levels of the hormone GLP-1. This is the same hormone that injectables, like Ozempic, mimic to promote weight loss. I like this product because it is typically well tolerated and works on gut health to promote hunger hormone balance.

MegaSporeBiotic by Microbiome labs is my go to probiotic for patients who are needing to recover their microbiome after antimicrobial therapies or antibiotics. The spore forming strains in this product are robust and are relatively well tolerated.

Glucose Control Pro by Pendulum is a probiotic specially formulated to lower HbA1c and postprandial glucose spikes. This blend is particularly useful for those with blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance. This blend should be refrigerated and run by your healthcare provider

Fiber Powders

Herbulk by Metagenics is my favorite fiber supplement. It tastes similar to Metamucil, but without all the sugar and fake ingredients. 1 scoop of Herbulk has 7 grams of fiber and is tasty to drink on its own. I recommend drinking one glass of Herbulk 20 minutes before the time when you are most prone to overeating.

Fibermend by Thorne is a great fiber product that is higher in soluble fibers – specifically guar gum, which may be the best at suppressing and overactive appetite. I will say that this is not a particularly tasty blend. You will have to hide it in a smoothie, coffee, pancake, etc.

RAW Organic Fiber by Garden of Life is a whole foods fiber blend that is high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Though higher in calories (120 per serving), this fiber product is nutritious and may be a more appropriate longterm solution for those with gut dysbiosis and inflammation.

Cortisol Support

Ashwagandha by Jarrow Formulas contains the root of the Withania somnifera plant. Ashwagandha has been shown to improve stress resiliency and lower cortisol levels. Due to a lack of longterm data, it is only recommended to implement ashwagandha for 90 days and then discontinuing use.

GLP-1 Probiotic by Pendulum is a novel blend of bacteria that have been shown to decrease food cravings by increasing endogenous levels of the hormone GLP-1. This is the same hormone that injectables, like Ozempic, mimic to promote weight loss. This probiotic can be really helpful for fighting the sugar cravings associated with high cortisol levels.

L-Theanine by Integrative Therapeutics is an extract from the green tea plant. This amino acid has been shown to increase both serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, which leads to an overall calming effect. Data suggests that L-theanine is best dosed during the time of a particular stressor.

Buffered Vitamin C by Integrative Therapeutics is an antioxidant essential for various functions in the body. It has also been shown to improve lower stress by improving neurotransmitter balance in the brain. Supplementing Vitamin C can be a safe and effective way to reduce stress and balance cortisol levels.

HERBATONINPRO by Symphony is a plant-based low dose melatonin designed for longterm use. Supplementing at 0.3mg has been shown to improve sleep quality and improve circadian regulation in those who have trouble falling asleep.

Magnesium Glycinate by Pure Encapsulations is an affordable and well absorbed form of magnesium, an essential mineral for regulating stress levels in the brain. Chronic stress has been shown to lower magnesium levels. For this reason, replacing magnesium with a supplement might be an important for certain individuals suffering from chronic psychological stress.
